That goal against Accrington Stanley the other night — watch it again. See what he does. He receives the ball with his back to goal, ten yards inside the Stanley half. Controls it. Holds off two defenders. Turns and sweeps a perfectly weighted ball into the path of Ronan Curtis out wide. Then he goes like the clappers towards the penalty area, darts into space, no one picks him up — and he meets the cross unmarked. It’s a great goal. Yes, it’s against ten-man Accrington Stanley, but nevertheless a more than decent bit of football.

Unfortunately, everything else he did on Tuesday night was awful. He was barely involved (not the only one, by any stretch), and when he was, he was wasteful. Dispossessed far too easily in promising positions. Just before his goal, he blazed a shot from just inside the penalty area out for a throw-in. It was embarrassing. Frustrating for us fans — and clearly for his teammates too. We all can clearly see this.

My feelings on Mo? I think there is some value in throwing him on in the last ten minutes when we are desperately in need of something happening. He shouldn’t be starting.

But who should be first choice to partner Devante Cole? In my ideal world, it’s Jayden Stockley. But right now, he looks miles off full match fitness. He’s not getting any younger, and it’s showing. Needs to be used sparingly. Ultimately, we’ll need him at full battery. If Devante hits a drought, we’re going to struggle for goals.

Dajaune Brown? I’m not convinced. He’s busy, he works hard — like the Duracell bunny. But he’s neither a goal scorer nor a creator. That assist for Gabriel at Barnsley? No way did he mean it. He had no idea Gabriel was there. Then there was that moment against Northampton in the second half — their keeper comes charging out and kicks thin air. Dajaune’s onto it, has all the time in the world to find a teammate, but chooses an impossible pass through two defenders. He has to do better. Maybe that example feels nit-picky, but there have been plenty of other moments when he’s had the ball at his feet in the box, head down, unaware of what is happening around him and it all comes to nothing. There are aspects of his game I like — he presses well, never gives defenders any let-up, always committed to the cause. But he lacks any sort of prowess in the box. I very much doubt he’ll give us five league goals this season.

And the same goes for Ruari. He won’t give us five league goals this season either. I love the guy, truly want things to happen for him, but deep down we all know it probably won’t. He’s 100% committed, works his socks off, gives everything to the cause — and still finishes games with no end product.

And so we come back to Mo Faal.

In the main, he’s been disappointing. He’s looked non-league at times. But despite all this, I would not be in the least bit surprised if he scored more goals than Paton and Brown between them this season. Seriously — if Mo stays with us for the whole season, he’ll probably finish as our second top scorer.

Strikers need moments, and Mo, regardless of how poor he is playing, will have them.
